What’s it like to drive the Road to Hana? 🌴🌴🌴
If you want to go on one of the most beautiful drives in America, you must drive the road to Hana on the island of Maui.
According to Wikipedia, “The Road to Hana is 64.4 miles long and is very winding and narrow and passes over 59 bridges, 46 of which are only one lane wide. ”
Here’s a peak of a video we created to inspire you to drive the Road to Hana.
The Road to Hana is a full day trip when you include stopping for sightseeing such as waterfall hikes and swimming in a gorgeous black sand beach. It’s best to start the day early to avoid some of the traffic. You will also want to watch out for some of the locals coming from the opposite direction as they tend to drive very fast.
I recommend you download the Shaka Guide Maui App and within the app there is a tour called “Road to Hana.” On our recent trip we used this app and found it educational and entertaining. The app notices your GPS co-ordinates on your smart phone and gives you insider knowledge of which places to visit and which ones to skip. My entire family loved it!
Wear your swimsuits for improptu swimming and we always take a picnic lunch with us to eat at the Waianapanapa State Park as they have picnic tables there. This is where the famous back sand beach is in the above video. You may want to wear water shoes if you swim in the beach there.
If there has been lots of rain or flooding, you may consider making sure the Road to Hana is open before you go. But, if you go, you will be rewarded with some of the most breathtaking scenery on this earth!
